Don't Make Me Angry!, Part 18: 2001: A Space Odyssey #9

 2001 in name only!

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY #9 finds Jack Kirby abandoning the concept of the series almost completely, and going all in on the adventures of X-51, alias "Mister Machine". (Not as catchy as "Machine Man".)

When we last saw X-51, he was getting ready to break out of his cell, with the aid of a Monolith. Well, the Monolith doesn't do jack, but X manages to escape, regaining his face in the process. As he gets his first real taste of freedom, he encounters a Monolith (Another one....? The SAME one....?), and looks at it for a panel before getting distracted by a nosey kid and his aunt, who is struggling to change a flat tire. The newly self-christened Mister Machine pitches in to lend a land or two, but soon finds himself under attack by the minions of a new masked bad guy....

There wasn't much to this issue, which basically consisted of two extended fight scenes against two different groups of faceless underlings. We have one issue to go, and Kirby seems to have thrown in the towel on the 2001 concept, which is sad...I'd love to know where he was headed with it, if he had been given enough time.

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY #9 earns a meh five out of ten cars full of nosey kids:
