Don't Make Me Angry!, Part 24: Nextwave, Agents of H.A.T.E., Vol. 2: I Kick Your Face
NEXTWAVE, AGENTS OF H.AT.E., Vol. 2: I KICK YOUR FACE sees the team of writer Warren Ellis and artist Stuart Immonen find their footing on the title, just in time for it to be cancelled.
This second volume collects NEXTWAVE, AGENTS OF H.A.T.E. #'s 7-12, and finds the team engaged in a battle against hordes of Mindless Ones (From the pages of Doctor Strange), and engaging the true leader of H.A.T.E. and his teams of knockoff superheroes (Including, at last....FOBUSH-MAN, complete with a soup-pot helmet!!!!!), both of which lead to all kinds of terrible, inventive super-powered destruction. There's a small Elsa Bloodstone sequence that gives Ellis and Immonen the opportunity to deliver a short, perfect spoof of Mike Mignola and Hellboy, which is worth the price of admission alone. I complained about Immonen's bland artwork in my previous NEXTWAVE review, but there are a sequence of inventive double-page spreads in this collection that show Immonen to be capable of creating exemplary, exciting art. I just wish that he had used more of that style on the bulk of this series...it might have brought more eyes to the book, and staved off cancellation.
It's a shame that the rug was yanked out from under them just as they found the sweet spot, but maybe this title went on just long enough. Either way, this is a fun, exciting, often hilarious, collection, and earns eight out of ten mindless ones:
