The formula begins to grow stale....
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY #4 delivers the conclusion of the two-part Marak saga, and it ends exactly as you might expect, just with a slight twist: We again flash-forward to the year 2001, and meet another doomed astronaut who is saved from impending death by a Monolith. The twist is that this guy, seemingly a descendant of Marak, refuses to die so he can evolve into a space baby. Take that, you meddling Monolith.
Only four issues in, and the formula is getting stale as year-old bread. Does Kirby have some amazing payoff in store? Probably not, as the book was canceled prematurely and spun off into a different title. But I have hopes that the storyline, like the space babies, will grow and evolve before the curtain closes on this title.
Just as an aside, Marak makes Conan look like a slacker. Yeah, Conan rode horses, commanded armies, and used the wheel, but did he invent any of that shit....? Exactly.
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY #4 earns a good, but slightly stale, six out of ten doomed spaceships:
