Kirby breaks from the formula at last!
And in breaking with the formula, delivers the most visionary issue of this title yet.
The story opens in the year 2040, with a superhero/supervillain clash that is soon revealed to be part of an elaborate role-playing game for bored citizens of 2040 New York. Kirby may as well have predicted what life would be like in 2018 with this story....the national obsession with comic-book heroes, the proliferation of online shopping, the next-best-thing to a prediction of streaming movie services......this isn't a great issue, but it is clearly one that was way ahead of its time. I was hoping for a break from the formula, and this might very well be it. Yes, it still has the man-meets Monolith motif throughout, but....it's a good start. Here's hoping that part two of this tale will keep the newfound momentum going.
